What is Progesterone Testing and Why Does It Matter?

Progesterone testing plays a crucial role in determining the optimal time for breeding and predicting the delivery date for dogs. This cost-effective, straightforward, and secure testing method is essential, especially when collaborating with external stud dogs or utilizing artificial insemination, ensuring precise timing for successful breeding.

Can I Use Progesterone Testing to Test When My Girl Will Go In Heat?

No, as the chart above indicates, the hormone does not rise until immediately prior to ovulation.

I am interested in using Shipped Semen/AI. When do I need to start testing and what am I looking for?

Typically you begin testing your bitch 5-7 days after her bloody discharge is noted. Once testing has begun, you test every two-three days (or every other day, depending on the level) until the target result is reached.

What is the target number?

The target number will vary depending on what inseminate procedure is planned and which type of test is utilized. See the below breakout information and chart. It is important to know what machine your vet is using to measure progesterone, as they can varying drastically.

Breakout Information for miniVIDAS

  • Natural Breeding (Live Cover) - once the dogs level is above 8 ng/ml. Begin placing the dogs together. Experienced studs may be less enthusiastic until higher numbers are reached.

  • Chilled Semen (Shipped/AI) - Need to know both when the progesterone has risen above 15 ng/ml and insemination usually occurs closer to 21 ng/ml.

  • Surgical Insemination (Frozen) - Once the progesterone has risen above 35 ng/ml. This is the “last chance” to breed.
